150 celebrities are using their social media power to promote the fundraising campaign ‘I’m Gonna Be Your Friend’, organised by the charity Save the Children. The campaign’s aim is to raise awareness of a major famine that is sweeping across east Africa, affecting around ten million people.
The campaign has launched a short film, directed by Kevin MacDonald, to highlight the struggles of those affected by the severe drought. Featuring the song ‘High Tide Or Low Tide’ by Bob Marley & The Wailers, the video can be downloaded from iTunes, through Bob Marley’s Facebook page and the campaign’s website. But by enlisting the help of celebrities to promote the film through Twitter and Facebook, the video could be viewed by up to 700 million people globally according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Justin Bieber have pledged to support the ‘I’m Gonna Be Your Friend’, as well as U2, Coldplay, Britney Spears, Shakira and Madonna.
‘Not one child should be denied food nor water’, said Bob Marley’s widow Rita Marley. ‘Not one child should suffer. Along with Save the Children, we must stand up together as friends to put a stop to this, to feed our children and to save their lives’.
