With the National Football League‘s 2014 season set to kick off in 16 days, the Wall Street Journal has learned the league is considering three musical acts for the 2015 Halftime show: Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay. But there’s a twist. This year, the NFL is asking the artists for a “pay for play” scenario, where they would contribute some of their post-Super Bowl tour income or another financial contribution in exchange for the slot.
Sources said that, not surprisingly, the reception to this idea has not been positive. As noted, the artists that get the coveted spot usually see a spike in music sales the following week. Recent performers Beyonce and Bruno Mars have also used the platform to launch ticket sales for their upcoming tours.
