“Princess of China” may not be Chris Martin of Coldplay‘s only collaboration with pop princess Rihanna. In an interview with Fresh 102.7/New York (a CBS Radio station), Martin revealed he’d been trying his hand at writing a new track for Rihanna.
But even an award-winning, chart topping songwriter like Martin isn’t a shoo-in. He said he didn’t know if we’d be hearing his work for her.
“She has so many amazing people writing for her. It’s like trying to win American Idol, getting a song on Rihanna’s album,” Martin said.
He said the exercise of writing for Rihanna was a “busman’s holiday” — meaning he was meant to be on a break from work and decided to spend that time in the studio writing songs.
“I don’t think she even asked, I just said, ‘Please can I try something?’” Martin said of going into the studio to write for the Barbadian singer. “…Sometimes there’s a break from Coldplay stuff and I love to go and work on other music. It gives you fresh angles and new ideas. Things like that.”
