Rihanna wins the 2018 Met Gala

Rihanna can always be counted on to dress on theme, and this year, the Bajan singer, songwriter, actress, and a cohost of the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Ball, which this year celebrates the exhibit “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” lived up to her reputation, arriving at the gala perfectly appointed for the “Sunday best” dress code.

She reigned over the red carpet in a show-stopping strapless, hand-beaded minidress by Maison Martin Margiela, complete with a papal mitre—the ceremonial headdress of bishops—evoking an image of the first female pope ever. “It feels expensive!” she said to YouTube personality and red carpet host Liza Koshy of the Stephen Jones creation. “It would be a sin not to wear it!” The two shared a few laughs before Koshy bid her adieu: “Thank you for blessing this carpet!” Can we get an amen?

Finishing things up with a bishop’s hat by Stephen Jones millinery and sleek hair and makeup, the star began the night on an epic high note. Never one to be reined in, Rihanna probably won’t be trading her decadent wardrobe for a habit any time soon, but her inventive take on the night’s fashion message shows why she continues to inspire the fashion faithful.
