Remember our Throwback Thursday posts? Well, to be honest, we almost forgot about them too but inspired by Rihanna’s latest hairstyle change, I decided to go back to the first time she rocked them: 2012. Quite a long time ago, right? I think so, too. Therefore I was very excited and happy when I saw that Rihanna is rocking dreadlocks again as it is one of my favourite hairdos of hers and what’s more, it is connected with one of her best TV performances.
In 2012 Rihanna was promoting her third (and last) single from Talk That Talk Where Have You Been which she performed during the Season 11 Finale of American Idol on May 23rd.
What Rihanna could tell us about her bold decision to get heavy “as Goliath’s balls” dreadlocks? Well what we know is that she wanted them “since I was 14, but mama Fent’z wasn’t havin it! Hehe”. She definitely is a big fan of Bob Marley so it is some kind of homage to the late icon and the look is indisputably inspired by her culture.
Dreadlocks can be an expression of deep religious or spiritual convictions, ethnic pride, a political statement and in more modern times, as a representation of a free, alternative or natural spirit. Another name for the style is loc(k)s.
Along with the change we got one of Rihanna best selfies that you could see above. Unfortunately, we did not get to see any candids with this hairstyle (unlike now) as Rihanna changed it very quick. So now it is our time to thrive and also relive Rihanna’s amazing performance of one of her biggest hits. This performance is one of my favourites because of RiRi’s involvement in the choreography and her strong vocals. Plus the stage and Rihanna herself looked fire, too. Enjoy!
THROWBACK THURSDAY COMES BACK NEXT WEEK!
