Via OfficialCharts: Rihanna may be an old hand at scoring Number 1 singles and albums, but now the Bajan singer / songwriter can add a Number 1 film on the Official Video Chart to her list of accolades.

Her debut feature film, Battleship – which also stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard – has gone straight in at Number 1 on the Official Video Chart, outselling its closest competitor, Lockout (starring Guy Pearce), by 3.5 copies to one.

“It was scary to get involved with such a big film,” said Rihanna. “But it’s been beyond my expectations! The action, and the graphics, the CGI is incredible! It was an amazing experience, so I’m looking forward to doing more films in the future for sure.”

Rihanna on how ‘Battleship’ helped her shake ‘being a celebrity’

Via Entertainment Weekly: When director Peter Berg told EW earlier this year about offering Rihanna the role of a tough weapons officer in Battleship, he said she had one condition:

“She said, ‘I’ll do it, but please you have to promise me you won’t treat me special, you’ll treat me like you would any other actor, you’ll make me work and you won’t go easy on me.’”

But in this exclusive sneak peek at a behind-the-scenes featurette on the Battleship Blu-ray and DVD (out Aug. 28), Rihanna sees it the other way around. As she puts it, it was Berg who

“really got me out of the mentality of being a celebrity, or ‘Rihanna.’”

Clearly, the two hold a mutual appreciation; be sure to listen for the moment after Rihanna finishes shooting a scene when Berg proclaims, “That’s hoooooooooot!” Check out the clip here.

Rihanna talks to MTV News about “Battleship” inspiration

Only a few more days until the year’s biggest aliens-at-sea adventure movie ”Battleship” sails into theaters. In addition to the intrigue surrounding the sheer spectacle of the film and the very attractive cast, the Peter Berg-directed tentpole features the highly anticipated motion-picture debut of pop superstar Rihanna.

In the film, Rihanna plays the no-nonsense, tough-as-nails Petty Officer Cora “Weps” Raikes, who delivers one of the film’s more memorable one-liners, as well as a believably badass performance. When MTV News caught up with the “Where Have You Been” singer recently, we asked if she looked to any specific action movies or actresses for inspiration.

“There were a few — I won’t name them, but there were a few,” Rihanna admitted of studying other badass onscreen ladies. “[They were] mostly actresses I looked to and looked up to and embodied their characters and tried to see how they would approach the action. I watched a lot of bad bitches,” she said with a smile.

In looking ahead toward a potential acting career, Rihanna said she doesn’t have a specific five-year-plan, but she hopes to be able to explore more opportunities as they come her way.

What characteristics do you share with your character?

RIHANNA: I think mostly being one of the boys. I really liked that. I was used to that, growing up with my brothers, and all my cousins. It was rarely any girls around, and I guess I didn’t feel out of place.

Did all of your video acting help this process? Or was it totally new, learning marks and timing?

RIHANNA: I thought it would help. But little did I know, it was a completely different beast. It was brand new, and it was a whole different experience. It was a much bigger set. I had to use dialog and I never really use that in my videos; it’s usually just me acting to a track, a musical track. So that was different. Having an accent, too.

Universal’s Battleship continues to screen strongly overseas with estimates from Day 2 and Day 3 bringing the 72-hour total to $58 million with all 26 international territories now open. Director Peter Berg’s military vs alien actioner opened to #1 in 24 of those new territories. Battleship opens next weekend in 24 more international territories including China (April 18) and Russia (April 19) — but not in the U.S./Canada until May 18th:

  • The UK opened #1 on Friday with an estimated $1.3M (£770). That’s ahead of Thor but ahead of Wrath Of The Titans and John Carter. The total with previews is $3.7M (£2.3M).
  • Spain opened #1 with an estimated $900k (€681k), better than Iron Man.
  • Germany opened #1 on Thursday with $900K, which is the biggest opening for an English language film in Germany this year. It continued #1 on Friday with $1.2M, equal to Iron Man but not as big as Transformers.
  • Japan opened #1 with an estimated $900k (LC 72M), higher than Thor‘s opening day.
  • Thailand opened #1 with $470K, which is the biggest opening day of 2012 and Universal’s 2nd biggest opening day ever (behind only Fast Five).
  • Malaysia opened #1 with $390K, which is Universal’s biggest opening day of all time.
  • Korea had another strong day and Battleship remains #1 with a three-day total of $4.2M (LC 4.7M) — better than Iron Man and Thor.
