And we are back once again. On Tuesday we celebrated “We Found Love’s” fourth birthday! Time flies, huh? The multiplatinum single, the song that opened the doors for Calvin Harris’ international career, the anthem, the flawless tune, timeless record, record-breaking Hot 100 Number 1 song, premiered on September 22, 2011. So today we are celebrating its birthday with this special Throwback Thursday post.
When you think about Rihanna’s biggest hits, you instantly think of “We Found Love”. The song shaped the trends in music when it was first released. Suddenly, everyone wanted a club anthem. Everyone wanted a song with Calvin Harris. And they thought they can be as successful as Rihanna. They thought. But “We Found Love” was a hit from the start. From the first listen, the fans knew the song is gonna be B I G. And it was. It still is!
Many club songs were released, many were successful, but only “We Found Love” deserves to be called “timeless”. But what makes “We Found Love” so unique? In my opinion, it’s Rihanna’s vocals. Nobody could have done that better. This song was made for her, crafted for her. Her vocals made it great, she shaped this song with her unique voice. Even Calvin Harris admitted that himself.
The song is Rihanna’s biggest hit to date. It spent 10 non-consecutive weeks (8 consecutive) atop Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was her 11th single to reach the top of the list. It was also the longest-running number one song of 2011. In 2013 Billboard announced that “We Found Love” is the 24th biggest Hot 100 hit of all time in the chart’s 55-year history. In the UK , the song debuted at #1. Rihanna was the first female solo artist to have six number one singles in five consecutive years. It also gave Rihanna the second chart double in 2011: her album “Talk That Talk” topped the album chart when “We Found Love” was on top of the single chart. The song is 9x platinum and is 86th most successful song of all time. The music video won a Grammy Award in “Best Short-Form Music Video” category.
